BEACONS AND LIGHTSHOWS AS NCI CELEBRATE THE QUEENS PLATINUM JUBILEE

2nd June 2022. The Queens Platinum Jubilee was celebrated by the National Coastwatch Institution with a number of events being held around the country.

Eleven NCI stations lit beacons or braziers at 21:45 on Thursday 2nd June to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Many other stations took part in beacon events organised in conjunction with their local authorities, or other organisations, and most of our stations around the country marked this unique occasion with light displays, bunting, flags and even laser displays.

Specially commissioned Beacons were lit during public events at or near the NCI stations at Boscastle, Calshot Tower, Gwennap Head, Lyme Bay, Newhaven, St Donats Head, Stone Point, Torbay, Whitstable and Worms Head, and there were also beacons lit at private events held at Canvey Island, Nare Point and Skegness. Several of these were attended by dignitaries including the High Sheriff of Cornwall and several Mayors. Many stations who were unable to host a beacon event held open days, had stalls at public events or even lit up their stations with coloured light and laser displays.

The volunteer members of the National Coastwatch Institution are very proud to have taken part in this special, historic event to celebrate Her Majesty the Queens Platinum Jubilee. We'd like to thank everyone who attended any of our events and give a very special thank you to our stations and watchkeepers for all their efforts in organising and staging them.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
