Filey

NCI Filey has opened and commenced operations, the first operational watch having taken place on the 15th July 2022. The station is recruiting and training new watch-keepers. As NCI Filey develops over the coming months , we will be looking to extend the number of days of the week that we are operational.
Visitor Policy
Visitors are welcome at the watch-station, however, when an incident is ongoing or when training is taking place, this may not always be convenient and the duty watch-keeper may ask visitors to call back later. The structure is very compact so visitors are more likely to be standing in the doorway rather than invited in. For information - NCI Filey cannot accept any post or mail - please contact Station Manager for postal options.
Access

From the A165, follow the A1039 into Filey town centre where there are numerous parking options. A short walk towards the main promenade. Access to the pedestrianised Royal Parade at the south of the town can be either via The Beach or Crescent Hill. Facing seawards, turn right and the watch-station is located at the south end of Royal Parade, close to local amenities.

Local Hazards
The main hazard in the Filey Bay area would be the Carr Naze and Filey Brigg. This promontory is situated to the north of the bay and extends eastwards into the North Sea. The Brigg is easily accessible from the north beach area at low water, but at high water, can be cut off from the beach access egress points. The most eastern point of the Brigg has very strong currents which can take unsuspecting persons and small vessels away from the safety of the bay. To the south of Filey Bay, towards Reighton Sands, there can be incidents of dangerous rip tides and / or rip currents.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
