During 2020 all NCI stations closed for two months at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. On re-opening most stations were single-crewed for the rest of the year.

47285 02/09/2023 NCI Gwennap Head NCI heard message from FV to HMCG re. upturned kayak on rocks, person holding onto it. Updated to say kayak now in water, person clinging on. Not visible from NCI. 47205 28/08/2023 NCI Rame Head Distorted MayDay heard on Ch16 from vessel reported to be near Rame Head. NCI looked for vessel in distress - negative. HMCG informed. CG attempted to contact vessel, and asked to call 999, but , neither request was answered. Incident downgraded to Pan Pan, W/K walked to look along shore - nothing seen, CG informed. 47161 26/08/2023 NCI Nells Point HMCG called NCI re. yacht aground on causeway. NCI established visual, 5 POB, asked to monitor. Crew signalled emergency. Nearby vessel stood by. May Day then issued, ILB tasked. AWLB and CRT, also tasked. CG decided to evacuate casualties when causeway uncovered, so LBs stood down. casualties evacuated on foot later, and waiting to refloat vessel on tide, but damage possible. MCA/HMCG Yes Yes 531422

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire. 

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
