During 2020 all NCI stations closed for two months at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. On re-opening most stations were single-crewed for the rest of the year.

41808 07/05/2022 NCI Porthcawl NCI observed 3 jet skiers, one fell off but got back on. Report then heard of one injured. HMCG requested visual from NCI - negative as out of sight. 41793 06/05/2022 NCI Rhoscolyn Coasteering team called HMCG re. person fallen into sea, not breathing. CG asked if NCI had visual, negative, monitoring continued. 41770 04/05/2022 NCI Portland Bill NCI observed a yacht towing a second larger yacht. The skipper of towing yacht was exhausted, and called several times on Ch65. Towed yacht then called and requested commercial sea rescue., Sea rescue declined to help, HMCG contacted and AWLB was tasked. NCI tracked LB visually until out of sight, station was then closed. Currently 57 NCI stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteers keeping watch around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire. 

NCI watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the NCI ensures that high standards are met.
