SKEGNESS 999 DAY PROVIDES FUN WITH A SERIOUS MESSAGE

15th August 2018. The emergency services were out in force today - but this time it was all for fun. Crowds flocked to the annual Carnival 999 Day in Tower Gardens, where the emergency services joined the live entertainment being performed as part of the Skegness Summer Festival. As well as providing a chance for visitors to find out about Skegness’s local heroes and even consider joining them, it was also a chance for the services to discover more about each other with exhibitions by the Police, Fire Service and the Parachute Regiment amongst many others.

The National Coastwatch Institution station at Skegness also had a stand and the volunteers still found time to speak to visitors at the 999 day despite having been busy earlier in the day liaising with HM Coastguard over an incident concerning three inflatables between Ingoldmells and Chapel St Leonards. Station Manager Paul Woolley said the volunteers have had a busy year so far with incidents involving inflatables. He said “We have 31 volunteers at the moment working from our lookout in Winthorpe seven days a week. We are always looking out for more volunteers.”

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
