NCI AT THE NEWHAVEN FISH FESTIVAL

16th June 2019. Thousands of people enjoyed a festival this weekend to celebrate all things fish and the team from NCI Newhaven were there to support them.

Newhaven Fish Festival saw more than 3,000 fish-lovers celebrate the delicacy – and their town –in a day packed full of dancing, sunshine and drumming. On Saturday children dressed in outfits designed in art classes funded by the Rampion wind farm joined mermaids and seagulls to parade through town and there were community group stalls, businesses on the promenade, art displays and live entertainment. The annual event, which celebrates the town’s fishing industry, has been held for more than a decade.

The volunteers from the National Coastwatch station at Newhaven were also there with their stand celebrating the 25th anniversary of the charity and showing the visitors what they do. The stand was very popular and the team were able to answer lots of visitors questions, and even attract potential volunteer watchkeepers.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
