NCI HERNE BAY TEAM VISIT DOVER COASTGUARD

8th March 2018. In the spirit of inter-agency co-operation, the team from NCI Herne Bay were invited to visit the HM Coastguard Operations Centre at Dover.

Eight members of the team at NCI Herne Bay were able to visit the HM Coastguard Operations centre at Dover where they were able to observe the equipment and discuss the procedures used by the Coastguard in the course of their duties. They were also able to see the full extent of the computerisation of much of the traditional nautical equipment used by many NCI stations. At the end of the day, both parties gained a greater appreciation of the roles each other contribute to the SAR community.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
