NCI GWENNAP HEAD ATTEND THE FIRST PENZANCE MARINE CHARITY FAIR

4th December 2021. NCI Gwennap Head was very well represented at a pre-Christmas event held in Penzance to bring marine charities together and encourage people to look at the work they do.

The first ever Penzance Marine Charity Christmas fair set out to help young and old alike to learn more about the marine wildlife that thrives in Mounts Bay and discover the activities of the charities that step in to help and monitor marine animals in West Cornwall. Gwennap Head volunteer watchkeepers, organised by Publicity Officer Margaret Keith, attended in shifts to join representatives from organisations like the British Marine Divers Life Rescue, Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Cornwall Wildlife Trust and many others.

Whilst the Gwennap Head National Coastwatch Institution watch team were able to raise a few funds, the primary purpose of their attending was to make contact with other organisations and raise awareness of their operations and collaboration with other SAR organisations. This was a very successful event with a number of attendees expressing an interest in becoming volunteer watchkeepers with  NCI as well as exchanging contact details to work with youth groups over coastal safety.

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
