MP VISITS NCI TEIGNMOUTH

10th September 2019. Anne Marie Morris, the MP for Newton Abbot visited the National Coastwatch Institution station at Teignmouth.

Miss Morris told Devon Live “ I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Coastwatch Lookout at Eastcliff in Teignmouth. I was welcomed by the station manager Eddy Stephenson – who celebrates 10 years in the role this year - and his team of watchkeepers. It was fantastic to see the excellent work that the Coastwatch volunteers are doing to protect people off our coast. Coastwatch are the eyes and ears of the Coastguard in the Teignmouth area, and work with them and with the RNLI every day to help save lives at sea”.

She added “ Teignmouth Coastwatch is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, and the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) its 25th. The NCI is a voluntary organisation that started in the South West and has expanded to cover coastal areas around the country. It operates thanks to the generosity of local people, and it was great to see the first-class technology available to the watch team that public donations have helped to provide”.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
